History

City Ballet of Houston brings ballet to a wide range of audiences.

City Ballet of Houston is a non-profit organization that has dedicated to supporting youth and community since its inception in 1958. Along with annual performances of The Nutcracker, City Ballet of Houston holds master classes and annual summer workshops, performs concerts that feature excerpts from classic ballet performances and original choreography and participates in SWRBA.

In 1969, City Ballet of Houston started providing master classes and annual summer workshops taught by world-renowned teachers and choreographers. Olga Baltacheyeva, Pavel Fomin, Luis Fuente, Anna-Marie Holmes, Alun Jones, Ted Kivett, Elvira Kokorina, John Magnus, Alexander Minz, Yuli Pandi, Michael Phillips, Michael Uthoff, Bruce Wells, Alan Hineline, Roni Mahler, Margo Sappington, Soili Arvola, Leo Ahonen and Robert Underwood are only a few who have taught and choreographed for City Ballet of Houston.

Starting in 1978 they have delighted audiences with their production of Tchaikosky’s The Nutrcacker, stage by Fredric Franklin.

In 1986, City Ballet of Houston brought this production to the children of the greater Houston area through they “Inner City Nutcracker Performance” sponsored by Inner City Productions, Inc., the Houston Parks and Recreation Department, the Houston Independent School District and the Cultural Arts Council of Houston. The Greater Houston Youth Nutcracker Project is considered one of the most valuable dance outreach program in Houston. Approximately 7,000 individuals are reached through its performances and it provides a unique opportunity to children and communities the chance to experience one of the most classis ballets of all time.
